Prerequisites

Courses and "aerobatics tasters" open to all previous and current PPL holders with a valid class 1 / 2 Medical certificate and also to airline pilots. If your PPL or Single Engine Piston (class) rating has lapsed we can revalidate it through the course of training.

Courses

We have a strong desire to find out your individual training needs and meet them. The following courses have been designed with this in mind. We would of course be delighted to tailor something especially for you once we have had an initial discussion with you.

CORE AEROBATICS TRAINING COURSES

THE ADVANCED FLYING COURSE:

The thrust of advanced flying – where most of the unique techniques are taught. Upon satisfactory completion of the course pilots will also gain an AOPA Basic Aerobatic Certificate. This course is made up of 8 hours of flying in 12 lessons (see below for lesson format) and the same again in ground school elements.

Technical subjects:

The following groundschool elements are covered during the course:

  • Legislation affecting aerobatic flying.
  • Aviation Medicine and Physiology.
  • Airframe and engine limitations.
  • Mechanics of flight.
  • Spinning theory.
  • Theory of manoeuvre.
  • Application of manoeuvre in fighter combat leading to practice of basic fighter combat manoeuvres as training exercises for improved coordination and orientation. Application of manoeuvre in aerobatic training
  • Airmanship and Airspace structure: South – East London region.
  • Aircraft Technical Knowledge, construction, engineering and Limitations.
  • EMERGENCIES – loss of power, loss of propeller oil, fire, structural failure.
  • Use of parachutes. Aircraft abandonment.
  • Competition aerobatics, judging and intro to ARESTI notation.

The applied syllabus of the Advanced Flying Course includes training for the exercises below taught in a specific sequence of bite-sized chunks to enhance progress.

  • Angle of Attack (natural) flying
  • Steep turns (various speeds) using natural technique
  • Adverse Yaw upright and inverted
  • Slipstream, torque and gyroscopic effects
  • Sideslipping and sideslipping approaches
  • Tailwheel training
  • Coordination exercises: Application of natural technique to stalling (upright), stalling inverted, stalling coordination exercise
  • Spinning – inducing a spin, incipient spinning and recovery, falling leaf. Coordination exercises with upright and inverted spinning. Practice in: normal spin, upright flat spin, upright flat spin with power, investigate spin entries and different recovery techniques. Practice: inverted spinning, inverted flat spin, inverted flat spins with power.
  • Upright and inverted spin mishandling.
  • Inverted turns.
  • Unusual Attitude recoveries, (incl spiral dives).
  • Turning and manoeuvre – max rate, max “g”, minimum radius turns. Optimising turns by using vertical / oblique planes. Application of turning – the wingover as a positioning manoeuvre and its variations. Basic fighter combat manoeuvres as training exercises – Hi Yo-Yo, Lo Yo-Yo, Rolling Scissors Split-S and Immelman turn. Further Emergency Manoeuvre training – break turns.
  • Forced Landings - advanced technique.
  • Basic Manoeuvres:Loop, Barrel Roll, Slow Roll and Stall Turn.
  • Combination Manoeuvres: Half Cuban, Half Reverse Cuban, Roll-off-the-top.
  • Sequence construction, energy and positioning.

THE ADVANCED FLYING COMPETITION COURSE – follows 'The Advanced Flying Course'

This course is made up of six hours of flying in nine lessons (see below for lesson format). Upon satisfactory completion of the course pilots will also gain an AOPA Standard Aerobatic Certificate. Ground school is more focused on competition aerobatic considerations: the Aresti system and sequence design, more advanced mechanics of flight and airmanship. The lessons and integral ground school elements cover the following:

  • Power, speed, rudder and balance, torque and gyroscopics.
  • Developing the slow roll: hesitations and on 45 degree climbing and descending lines.
  • Developing the loop.
  • The competition spin.
  • Developing the wingover – barrel roll (various speeds and angles); clover.
  • The vertical line and intro to fractions of vertical rolls.
  • Combinations of partial loops and rolls on 45 degree, vertical and horizontal lines: Roll-off-the-Top, Humpty and Split-S.
  • Stall turns and tail slides (and mishaps on vertical lines!)
  • The flick roll.
  • Knife Edge Flight.
  • Cuban and Half Cuban - Eights for competition.
  • Standard Level competion Known sequences and Free sequence design and construction.
  • Sequence flying (Standard Level):energy, safety heights and positioning.

THE ADVANCED FLYING MASTERS COURSE - follows 'The Advanced Flying Competion Course'

This course is made up of six hours of flying in nine lessons (see below for lesson format) and ground school elements. Upon satisfactory completion of the course pilots will also gain an AOPA Intermediate Certificate. The focus of the syllabus is on the vertical roll, positive and negative flick manoeuvres (and fractions) on climbing and descending lines, negative looping figures and rolling circles.
